Chapter 14 - the ambush

The next morning, Damon drove Evan to school in the old Chevy. The dirt road cutting through the sparse woods was deserted. Thick fog obscured visibility, creating an incredibly cold and silent space.
The former Marine's survival instincts immediately went on high alert. Suddenly, two black SUVs with no license plates shot out from a side alley, blocking the way. Four aggressive, tattooed thugs immediately stepped out of the cars.
Holding iron pipes and baseball bats, they advanced toward the Chevy. Evan sat in the passenger seat, gripping his seatbelt in fear. He had never witnessed such a terrifying scene.
"Duck down, close your eyes, and don't open them until I call you," Damon ordered. His voice was calm but authoritative. He pulled the keys out, slowly stepped out of the car, and looked at the hooligans.
The leader sneered contemptuously, swinging an iron pipe intending to deliver a fatal blow to his head. But Damon's speed far exceeded their imagination. He slipped past the attack perfectly.
