Chapter 32 - the black box

On a freezing early winter morning, Damon woke up early. Upon opening the front door to pick up the daily newspaper, he discovered a small black wooden box placed right on the steps. There were no stamps or sender's name.

The former operative's instincts were immediately and powerfully triggered. He took the box to the deserted backyard area. Using professional explosive detection skills, Damon slowly opened the wooden box with extreme caution and meticulousness.

There were absolutely no explosives inside. Nestled neatly amidst the red velvet was a silver military dog tag stained with rust. Damon picked up the tag, his heart suddenly pounding rapidly when he saw the engraved name.

The name engraved on the tag was 'Jonathan' - a former teammate who had bravely died in Damon's arms fifteen years ago. Beneath the tag was a candid photo of Evan in his police uniform on security patrol.

The photo was circled in red pen with the words: 'A life for a life'. Silas had officially declared war. He wasn't targeting Damon directly, but aiming straight at his sole and most precious weakness: his son.
