Chapter 3 - The Broken Breath
Damon pushed through the crowded spectator area, his worn leather work boots thudding softly against the floor. He didn't scream at the instructor. He completely ignored Blake's arrogant posturing and walked directly onto the blue training mat, dropping to one knee right beside his struggling, gasping son.
Damon placed his large, calloused hands incredibly gently onto Evan's heaving chest, expertly assessing the boy's ribs for any serious fractures with the precision of a seasoned combat medic.
"Easy. Breathe with me," Damon instructed, his deep voice radiating an absolute, unshakeable calm that instantly cut through the boy's rising panic.
Evan finally caught his breath, his small chest rising and falling rhythmically in time with his father's steady guidance. But as the physical pain began to slowly subside, the overwhelming, crushing psychological humiliation completely took over. The thirteen-year-old boy had just been violently battered in front of forty people.
Evan’s eyes filled with hot, heavy tears of pure, unadulterated defeat. He looked up at his father, his spirit entirely broken.
"I’m just not strong enough, Dad," Evan whispered, his voice cracking with profound sadness.
Damon’s jaw tightened into a rigid, invisible line. The quiet, passive plumber completely vanished in that exact fraction of a second, but his voice remained incredibly soft as he reached out and gently squeezed his son's shoulder.
"You’re stronger than you think," Damon reassured him, his tone vibrating with absolute, unyielding sincerity.
Damon reached into the pocket of his faded jeans and pulled out a keyring. He placed his heavy Chevy keys directly into Evan’s small hand, curling the boy's fingers securely around them.
"Wait for me outside," Damon commanded gently.

Evan nodded, climbing slowly to his feet and walking off the blue mat toward the exit, leaving his father completely alone with the monster.
