Chapter 5 - The Transformation

The entire Cedar Falls martial-arts gym plunged into a dead, suffocating silence.
The parents who had been protesting Blake's behavior moments ago now held their breath, completely terrified that they were about to watch a tired, out-of-shape local plumber get brutally beaten unconscious by a highly trained, five-time state champion.
Damon slowly walked over to his folding chair near the edge of the mat. He sat down quietly and began to methodically unlace his battered leather work boots. He pulled them off his feet and placed them neatly, side-by-side, perfectly aligned right beside the chair.
Next, he stood up and slowly unbuttoned his thick flannel overshirt. He removed the garment, folded it incredibly carefully with absolute, precise military discipline, and laid it smoothly over the back of the chair.
He stepped back onto the bright blue training mat in just his socks, faded jeans, and a simple gray work shirt that barely concealed the massive, heavily muscled athletic frame hidden beneath the cheap fabric.
Blake laughed again, completely misreading Damon's slow, methodical movements as fearful hesitation. The twenty-nine-year-old champion raised his fists high, adopting his flawless, aggressive kickboxing stance, ready to execute a devastating knockout.
"Ready, maintenance man?" Blake mocked loudly.
Damon didn't raise his hands. He didn't drop into a traditional boxing guard. He stood perfectly balanced on the blue mat, simply letting his thick, calloused arms hang entirely loose at his sides, exuding a heavy, lethal stillness that was completely devoid of any sport fighting mechanics.
"Whenever you are," Damon replied, his voice completely dead.

High up in the metal bleachers overlooking the mat, the Older Marine Veteran suddenly leaned heavily forward, his weathered eyes narrowing intensely as he began studying Damon’s highly unusual, relaxed posture incredibly closely.
