Chapter 11 - the silent drive

The old pickup truck rolled along the asphalt road under the sunset of Cedar Falls. The atmosphere inside the cabin was incredibly silent, with only the murmuring sound of the engine. Evan sat in the passenger seat, his eyes still holding pure astonishment.
He sneaked a glance at his father, who was calmly gripping the steering wheel. The man who usually just quietly fixed water pipes had today defeated a champion without needing to throw a single punch.
"Dad," Evan spoke hesitantly, breaking the silent atmosphere. "What you did at the gym... Where did you learn that?"
Damon did not answer right away. He tightened his grip slightly on the steering wheel, his deep black eyes reflecting the evening sun. Painful memories of the brutal battlefield and top-secret missions flooded back into his mind.
"There are places in this world, son," Damon said in a deep, warm voice containing a profound sadness. "Where violence is not a sport to show off. I learned how to survive there."
