Chapter 11 - the midnight call

Evelyn returned to her quiet home, took off the brilliant emerald green silk dress, and removed her makeup. Her heart had once bled from the trauma, but now it was beating with strong, absolutely serene rhythms.

She poured herself a cup of warm tea and sat down in her familiar velvet armchair by the fireplace. The hotel bill was placed neatly on the coffee table, like a perfect trophy after a major battle.

The clock struck exactly midnight. The quiet space was torn apart by the phone ringing loudly. The screen flashed continuously with the name 'David'. The ungrateful son had finally called.

Evelyn didn't answer immediately. She let it ring to the fourth chime, took a sip of tea, and then slowly swiped her finger across the screen. She didn't speak, keeping a terrifyingly cold silence over the line.

"Mom... you picked up," David's voice came from the other end, choking, sobbing, and containing absolute despair. "Mom, I'm sorry. I was wrong, Mom. Please save me."
