Chapter 9 - The House of Cards Collapses

The heavy, lethal silence that followed Evelyn’s words was broken only by the sound of glass doors shutting as the staff finished locking the empty ballroom.

All the color violently drained from Sherry’s face. The gold sequin jacket suddenly looked cheap and pathetic as she stared at the $27,300 invoice. She had invited over a hundred high-society friends, politicians, and country club members, all of whom were currently pulling into the valet parking outside.

She had no party. She had no food. And she had absolutely no money to cover the tab.

"Sherry... Sherry..." Sherry gasped, her voice high-pitched and hyperventilating as pure, unadulterated panic hijacked her nervous system. She clutched her chest, staggering backward, completely unable to form a coherent sentence.

Chloe burst into tears, her hands covering her face in her black evening dress. "David! Do something! My mother's friends are arriving! We're going to be the laughingstock of the city!"

David was completely frozen.

He looked at his mother-in-law in sheer panic and disbelief, completely caught off guard by the massive deception. He had allowed his own mother to be humiliated and banished, only to discover she was the only reason he wasn't standing in a courtroom for bankruptcy.
