Chapter 29 - the belated letter

A few days after Sherry and Chloe were thrown into jail awaiting trial, Evelyn received a handwritten letter from David. He didn't come to see her in person, because he knew he was no longer worthy of standing before that great mother ever again.

"Dear Mother," the letter was written in neat but trembling handwriting. "I am not asking for your forgiveness. I only want to thank you for giving birth to me, and apologize for becoming the absolute worst. Stepping up to testify was the only thing I could do to make amends."

"I have signed up to join a humanitarian aid volunteer team overseas. I will start my life over from scratch, trying to become the decent person you once hoped for. Wishing you health and happiness always. I love you, Mom."

Finishing the letter, Evelyn sighed softly. A single tear fell silently onto the page. It was not a tear of pain, but of serenity. Her misguided son had finally come to his senses and found a bright path for himself.

She folded the letter, storing it carefully in a drawer. All the grievances of the past had been completely resolved.
