Chapter 17 - ultimate bitterness

Sitting in the cramped apartment, flooded with unpaid bills, David scrolled through his mother's gorgeous travel photos on his phone. His heart clenched, a feeling of extreme bitterness and overwhelming regret surging up.
In one photo, Evelyn was smiling radiantly in front of the Eiffel Tower, wearing an exquisite pearl necklace around her neck that he knew perfectly well she had treated herself to. It was the pride of a woman who had let go of all sorrows.
David looked back at his worn-out navy suit, remembering the humiliating night in the hotel lobby. For the sake of vain ego and cowardice, he had lost the woman who loved and protected him the most unconditionally.
Chloe stepped out of the bedroom, tossing a piece of paper onto the table. "I already signed the divorce papers, David. I can't continue living with a bankrupt loser with no future like you anymore. My mother was right from the beginning."
David didn't get angry, nor did he beg her to stay. He picked up the pen and signed his name soullessly. He had lost everything: his family, his wife and child, his honor, and his assets. An ungrateful person will never receive a good ending.
