Chapter 18 - the washed-up queen

Sherry's downfall was incredibly tragic and humiliating. Backed into a corner by a series of civil lawsuits and overwhelming debts, she had to sell off her luxurious suburban home to get money to pay the bank.

From an arrogant woman who always flaunted her delusional wealth, Sherry now had to live in a rundown apartment complex, collecting unemployment benefits. No more tea parties, no more extravagant jewelry.

One afternoon, she walked out to the discount supermarket near her home. While picking out wilted vegetables, Sherry coincidentally ran into an old friend from the country club. She tried to turn her face away to hide her humiliating shame.

"Oh, is that Sherry?" the other woman let out a sarcastic laugh, looking her up and down. "You look so pathetic. I heard your son-in-law went bankrupt? Talk about instant karma for those who always love to show off."

Sherry couldn't utter a single word, hastily abandoning her shopping basket and fleeing the supermarket. Tears streamed down her aged and wrinkled face. Her toxic arrogance had finally burned herself to ashes.
