Chapter 8 - The Lethal Invoice

The cinematic tension in the grand lobby was absolutely suffocating.
David’s chest heaved in his navy blue suit as the horrifying realization set in. He looked from the dismantled ballroom, to Sherry’s unapologetic face, and finally, to his mother.
Evelyn slowly unclasped her small silver clutch. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. With perfectly restrained emotion, she pulled out a thick, folded piece of heavy hotel stationary.
David’s eyes locked onto the paper. He recognized the hotel's financial watermark.
"Mom..." David whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, devastating clarity. His defensive anger entirely melted into sheer, breathless panic. "Mom, you were paying for everything?"
Evelyn took a slow, deliberate step forward. The emerald green satin caught the light of the crystal chandeliers. She held up the invoice paper, holding it directly between David and Sherry so they could clearly see the bold, black ink at the bottom of the page.
TOTAL PAID: $27,300.00 STATUS: REFUNDED TO PRIMARY CARDHOLDER.
"You uninvited me from the birthday I paid for," Evelyn stated. Her voice was cold, firm, and echoed with an absolute, uncompromising authority that paralyzed everyone in the lobby.
She looked directly into Sherry’s horrified, wide eyes.
