Chapter 3 - The Cruel Message

The afternoon of the party, Evelyn felt a rare spark of excitement.

She had gone to a boutique and purchased the beautiful emerald green satin cowl-neck dress specifically for this occasion. She wanted to look elegant, to finally stand proudly beside her son and her new extended family. She spent hours doing her short grey hair, pinning her late husband's favorite silver brooch to her clutch.

She was just putting on her shoes when her phone buzzed on the vanity.

It was a text message from her daughter-in-law, Chloe.

Evelyn smiled, expecting a message about parking at the hotel. Instead, the words on the screen made the blood freeze in her veins.

"Hi Evelyn. So sorry for the late notice, but my mother decided she wants a strictly VIP, high-society aesthetic for the photos tonight. She feels like your presence might ruin the elite vibe she’s going for. It’s going to be mostly her country club friends anyway. David agrees it’s best if you just stay home and rest. We’ll bring you some leftover cake tomorrow! xoxo"

Evelyn stopped breathing.

She read the message three times. The sheer, suffocating cruelty of the words physically knocked the wind out of her. She wasn't just being excluded; she was being treated like a dirty, embarrassing secret.

And the worst part wasn't Sherry’s vanity. The worst part was the sentence: David agrees.

👉 Evelyn’s son had allowed her to be thrown away like trash, but the grieving widow was about to transform into a terrifying force of nature.
