Chapter 4 - The Emerald Transformation

Evelyn sat on the edge of her bed, her hands trembling as she held the phone.
A lesser woman would have completely broken down. She would have taken off the beautiful emerald green dress, wiped off her makeup, and spent the night weeping in the dark, wondering why her own flesh and blood didn't love her enough to defend her.
But as Evelyn stared at her reflection in the mirror, the profound, agonizing heartbreak slowly evaporated, replaced by a cold, absolute, and terrifying clarity.
She had sacrificed her life, her comfort, and her husband's hard-earned savings for a son who was too weak to stand up to a toxic mother-in-law. They thought she was just a pathetic, submissive old woman who would quietly accept their disrespect.
They had severely underestimated her.
Evelyn didn't take off the emerald dress. She smoothed out the satin fabric, her realistic facial micro-expressions hardening into a mask of pure titanium. She picked up her small silver clutch and her car keys.
She wasn't going to cry. She was going to the luxury hotel.
