Chapter 14 - exposing the true colors
Evelyn gently but firmly pried Chloe's hands off her legs. She pulled her phone from her coat pocket, played a short audio recording, and held it in front of the daughter-in-law who was looking confused and extremely panicked.
Chloe's shrill voice rang out clearly in the recording: "Don't worry, Mom, I've taken care of that old hag. She's so gullible. We can just relax and enjoy the party, no one will bother us."
Chloe's face instantly turned pale, drained of every drop of blood. This recording was inadvertently captured by Evelyn's front-door security camera when Chloe and David came to visit her a few days before the party.
"Did you think I was a senile old woman, Chloe?" Evelyn looked straight into her eyes, her tone as sharp as an invisible blade. "Your cruelty and my son's cowardice made an absolutely perfect combination."
The daughter-in-law took a few steps back, unable to utter another word of excuse. Every lie, every scheme of exploitation had been stripped bare and exposed to the light in the most naked way. She had completely run out of acts to play.
