Chapter 12 - the price of cowardice

The despair in David's voice did not awaken the slightest bit of weak maternal affection in Evelyn's mind. She had cast aside all blindness to face the harsh reality of the son she had carried and birthed.
"Save you, David?" Evelyn replied, her voice as flat and cold as a frozen river. "This morning you agreed to throw me out on the street like a piece of trash. You didn't need me anymore."
"Mom, please! The hotel manager called the police! They said I committed financial fraud because I can't pay the twelve thousand dollar compensation fee!" David wailed miserably, his melancholic echo transmitting through the phone.
"They are threatening to take me to court. Chloe is packing her bags and demanding a divorce because she can't stand this humiliation. Sherry is cursing me out for being a useless incompetent! Mom, I've lost everything!" he continued screaming.
Evelyn gently placed her teacup on the table, smirking bitterly. "Then you should learn to handle it yourself, David. You chose to protect your new family, now enjoy those privileges."
