Chapter 25 - the subpoena

On a brilliantly sunny morning, while Evelyn was watering the rosebushes on her front porch, a postal worker appeared and handed her a sealed envelope bearing a court stamp. As she read the lines inside, she frowned slightly.

The subpoena required her to be present at a mediation session to resolve a complaint regarding her civil capacity. The petitioner was none other than Sherry, under the guise of "a relative who once had a close relationship, concerned for her mental health."

Any elderly person receiving such a preposterous accusation would feel immense confusion and absolute indignation. But Evelyn did not panic in the slightest. After all those storms, she had learned how to receive the baseness of human nature with a cool head.

She did not call David, nor did she cry. She took off her gardening gloves, stepped into the house, and picked up the phone to call the most prestigious law firm in the city, the ones who had helped her establish this impenetrable trust fund years ago.
