Chapter 7 - The True Cost Revealed

David stepped in front of his wife and his mother-in-law, his realistic facial micro-expressions flashing with deep frustration and embarrassment.
"Mom, seriously?" David sighed, his voice dripping with condescension. "You came all the way down here to throw a tantrum because you didn't get your way? Chloe sent you a very polite message. You are completely embarrassing us in front of Sherry's guests."
Evelyn didn't flinch. Her natural breathing remained completely steady. She looked at her son, realizing for the final time that the boy she raised was entirely gone, replaced by a coward who worshipped his toxic in-laws.
Sherry pushed past David, glaring at Evelyn with pure disgust. "Tell the staff to stop this nonsense, David! I spent months designing this aesthetic, and I am not letting your dramatic mother ruin my special night!"
Sherry turned to a nearby event coordinator. "My son-in-law is paying for this! You listen to him!"
David’s face suddenly went pale. He looked at the massive scale of the party being dismantled. The ice sculptures, the crystal, the massive floral arches. He had only given Sherry a budget of five thousand dollars.
