Chapter 1 - The Broken Princess

Inside BELLANOTE, Manhattan's ultra-luxurious Italian restaurant, the atmosphere was thick with quiet, expensive tension. Soft rain glistened heavily against the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the city lights into golden streaks. Inside, towering crystal chandeliers cast a bright amber cinematic lighting over the polished black marble floors and gilded columns. Wealthy guests murmured in the burgundy leather booths, surrounded by dark mahogany walls, flickering golden lamps, and fresh white roses.
Standing near the kitchen, fighting a crushing wave of sheer exhaustion, was Maya Bennett.
The 28-year-old waitress was breathtakingly beautiful but heartbreakingly fragile. Her porcelain-fair skin and delicate feminine features were framed by long, glossy auburn-chestnut hair loosely gathered into a romantic messy bun, with soft strands framing her rosy cheeks. She wore an ivory puff-sleeve silk blouse, a fitted deep-emerald waitress vest, a matching emerald apron, and a tailored black skirt. She was working two grueling jobs, desperately saving every penny for her own bakery.
"Stop staring and clear the tables, you're worthless," hissed Marco, the restaurant manager. The strikingly handsome man in his 30s wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit and a burgundy tie, but his sharp jaw was tight with an unusual, nervous expression tonight.
Maya lowered her enormous watery hazel eyes, swallowing her humiliation, but she couldn't look away from the isolated corner booth.
Sitting there was Dante Russo. The 33-year-old devastatingly handsome Italian-American mafia billionaire was terrifying. His 6'3" extraordinarily muscular frame, massive shoulders, and powerful chest were clad in a luxurious midnight-black Italian three-piece suit and fitted black silk shirt. Subtle black tattoos peeked beneath his open collar. Despite his feared reputation and piercing pale-gray eyes, he looked completely helpless.
Beside him sat 5-year-old Sophia. The unbelievably adorable angel-faced little girl wore a dreamy royal-blue velvet princess dress with a delicate ivory lace collar and a large midnight-blue satin bow in her long glossy chestnut-brown curls. Her mother had disappeared three days ago. Sophia hadn't eaten, slept, or spoken since.
Dante gently offered Sophia a forkful of untouched pasta.
"Just one bite," Dante pleaded gently.
Sophia silently turned away.
Dante lowers the fork, his powerful expression softening into helplessness.
