Chapter 14 - the tears

The massive warehouse had been completely secured. The acrid smell of gunpowder mixed with the damp air. In the farthest corner of the dark room, Elena - Dante's wife - was tied tightly to a wooden chair.
She wore a torn silk dress, her brown hair matted with sweat. The moment she saw her husband's familiar silhouette, the tears Elena had held back for the past three days cascaded down her cheeks.
Dante tossed his gun aside, rushing forward to kneel and pull her into a tight embrace. The large hands typically used to take enemies' lives now trembled, gently untying her and caressing his wife's pale face.
"I'm here. You are safe now, Elena," Dante whispered, his voice choking with emotion. He pulled her tightly against his chest, feeling the beat of life still present, shedding a heavy boulder from his heart.
Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, sobbing as she leaned against his sturdy shoulders. The Falcones had misjudged a boss's love. They thought he would compromise, but he had chosen to destroy them.
