Chapter 10 - The Bakery of Dreams

Dante Russo, the most feared man in the city, did something the wealthy guests had never seen before. He slowly lowered himself to one knee directly in front of the fragile waitress in the deep-emerald vest.
"You risked everything to save my world," Dante whispered, his pale-gray eyes shining with profound, unguarded emotion. He looked at the red crayon still resting on the table. "You are not worthless, Maya. You are a guardian angel."
Maya let out a quiet, trembling breath, her rosy cheeks wet with realistic, relieved tears.
"You will never have to work another exhausting shift in your life," Dante vowed, his deep voice carrying the absolute weight of a billionaire's promise. "Tony!"
The distinguished owner stepped forward immediately.
"The commercial space next door. Buy it," Dante commanded softly, never taking his eyes off Maya. "Build her the bakery she’s been dreaming of. The Russo family will protect her business, and her life, forever."
Maya covered her naturally pink lips with her free hand, a beautiful, overwhelming sob escaping her chest. The crushing weight of poverty and fear was instantly lifted from her shoulders.

Sophia tugged gently on Maya’s hand. The little girl with the large midnight-blue satin bow looked up, a brilliant, dreamy smile finally breaking across her angel-faced features. The nightmare was over. Her father would bring her mother home, and she had found her savior.
If you were Maya, would you have risked your life to save the little girl in the dark alley, even knowing the kidnappers had guns?
