Chapter 17 - the offer
Dante stood back a bit, observing the joy of his wife and daughter. The cold demeanor of the mafia boss completely disappeared, giving way to the rare serenity of a family-loving man.
He stepped closer to Maya, placing a thick envelope on the marble counter. "Protecting this bakery is my promise of honor," Dante said, his voice deep and warm. "But I want you to accept another position."
Maya looked at the billionaire in surprise. "What position? I only know how to bake; I don't understand anything about big business." She replied in confusion, feeling too small before these powerful and wealthy people.
"The Russo family charity foundation," Dante explained. "We are establishing an organization to help abused women and children, the vulnerable in society. I need someone with a kind heart."
"You will be the project's executive director," Elena chimed in, holding Maya's hands. "No one understands hardship and has enough empathy like you do. You will help thousands of people change their lives, just as you have."
