Chapter 21 - the hidden truth

Years flowed onward like a gentle river of time. The Sweet Haven bakery chain expanded across the entire state, blooming into a beacon of warmth. Maya sat at her polished mahogany desk, carefully reviewing the foundation's latest architectural blueprints.

Suddenly, a thick, yellowed manila folder slid onto the corner of her desk. She looked up, startled. Standing before her was a senior federal investigator whose face was lined with decades of relentless service and unyielding determination.

"Miss Bennett, we reopened the cold case regarding the night Marco tried to kill the little girl," the investigator stated calmly, his voice gravelly and low. "We found records linking Marco's financial accounts to a higher target."

Maya's breath hitched in her throat. She gripped the edge of her wooden desk, her porcelain-fair skin turning pale. "Higher than Marco? Who could possibly be behind a kidnapping plot that terrifying?"

The investigator opened the heavy folder, revealing a series of encrypted wire transfers and high-resolution photographs. "A corrupt city councilman. He wanted to destabilize Dante Russo's legitimate shipping empire by attacking his family."
