Chapter 31 - the silent shadow

Ten years of absolute peace had transformed Sweet Haven into a sprawling empire of warmth and charity. Maya stood behind the pristine marble counter of her flagship bakery, smiling brightly as she handed a pastry to a grateful orphan.

But the cruel, unforgiving underworld of New York City never truly sleeps. While Dante Russo had eradicated his enemies, the massive power vacuum had slowly attracted a new, far more dangerous predator.

The Moretti syndicate, a ruthless crime family from Chicago, had quietly moved into Manhattan. They despised Dante's shift toward philanthropy and wanted to seize control of his lucrative shipping ports.

To cripple the Russo family, the Moretti boss, a cold-blooded killer named Silvio, decided to target the foundation of Dante's newly found peace: Maya's beloved bakery and charitable network.

Late one evening, as Maya locked the glass doors of the bakery, she noticed a black sedan idling across the rainy street. The tinted window rolled down, revealing the glowing ember of a cigar and cold eyes staring directly at her.
