Chapter 22 - the storm brews

Without a single moment of hesitation, Maya closed her office doors and drove straight to the heavily fortified Russo estate. The massive iron gates swung open smoothly, recognizing her vehicle instantly as a symbol of trusted family.
Dante was standing in the sprawling rose garden, teaching a teenage Sophia how to prune delicate white blossoms. When he saw Maya walking up the stone path with a tense expression, his legendary mafia instincts flared instantly.
He handed the pruning shears to Sophia, kissing his daughter's forehead before striding rapidly toward the steps. His massive shoulders tensed underneath his black shirt, his piercing pale-gray eyes locking onto Maya's worried face.
"Maya. What happened?" Dante demanded softly, his deep voice carrying the absolute, protective weight of a billionaire ready to declare war for the woman who saved his child. "You look like you've seen a ghost from the past."
Maya held out the yellowed manila folder, her hands trembling slightly as Dante's warm, calloused fingers brushed against hers. "It wasn't just Marco. The investigator found financial records pointing straight to a corrupt city councilman."
