Chapter 49 - the belated letter

A month after Arthur's incident, a phone call from the federal prison brought the news that Mark had passed away from a terminal illness in his cold cell. The last ghost of the past had truly vanished from this world.

The prison lawyer sent Claire an old envelope; inside was the suicide letter Mark had handwritten before taking his final breath. Claire opened the letter; Leo and Max stood silently beside her.

"Claire, when you read these lines, I will be gone," Mark wrote in a trembling handwriting. "Thank you for forgiving Arthur. You have always been an incredibly great queen, while I was just a fool who threw away the most precious diamond."

"I am not asking for your forgiveness; I only ask that you continue to shine. Leo and Max are so lucky to have a mother like you. Goodbye forever."

Claire folded the letter, her face calm without a single ripple. The hatred had burned out completely many years ago. She struck a match, set the letter on fire, and tossed it into the fireplace. The ashes fluttered and then disappeared completely into the air.
