Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Silence

The police officers waiting outside the double doors didn't even wait for Mark to turn around.
Heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut over the wrists of his light blue suit as they formally arrested him on federal charges of domestic fraud and extortion. The guests watched in absolute, morbid silence as the once-powerful corporate executive was hauled backward over the gleaming marble floors, his expensive leather shoes squeaking pathetically against the polished stone.
His mother wailed from the armchair, but no one offered her a tissue. No one offered her a hand. The high society they had manipulated for years had instantly cast them out like radioactive waste.
Inside the sleek black town car waiting at the curb, Claire sat comfortably in the leather interior, her two twin boys giggling softly as they played with their toys on the seat beside her.
Her father closed the car door smoothly, cutting off the chaotic sounds of the baby shower left behind.
"Are you alright, sweetheart?" her father asked softly, turning around from the front passenger seat.
