Chapter 11 - the sunlight

The next morning, the Boston estate was brightly illuminated after years of sinking into darkness. The warm dawn light shone through the massive glass windows, warming the luxurious bedroom where Elena was resting with her eyes closed.
She opened her eyes; the soft feeling of the bed and the fresh air made her think she was dreaming. For five grueling years, she had only known the musty smell and the rigidity of the cold stone floor in the dark basement.
Beside her, little Ivy was holding the dog Argo tightly, fast asleep. The massive black dog had been treated by a vet, the wound on his shoulder carefully bandaged. The scene was incredibly peaceful, miraculous, and overflowing with love.
The bedroom door softly opened, and Dante walked in with a tray of hot food. The cold, sharp eyes of the mafia boss were now filled with boundless gentleness and guilt. He carefully set the tray down and gently sat on the edge of the bed.
"How are you feeling, my queen?" Dante whispered, holding Elena's bony hand and placing a respectful kiss upon it. Physical wounds could heal, but the trauma to the soul remained incredibly deep.

Elena smiled weakly, her fingers caressing his chiseled face. The darkness had passed, but she knew full well the family's internal affairs needed a thorough purge.
