Chapter 9 - The Stolen Years

Dante kicked the heavy steel door open, the metal screeching loudly in the dark, damp corridor.

He stepped into the freezing, dimly lit cellar. The air was stale, smelling of cold stone and isolation. In the far corner, huddled on a thin, worn mattress wrapped in old blankets, was a woman.

Elena.

She was devastatingly pale, her dark hair long and unkempt, but the beautiful, fierce spark in her eyes had not been extinguished. When the heavy door crashed open, she instinctively grabbed a rusted iron pipe, ready to fight to the death to protect the daughter she had just successfully smuggled out through a loose ventilation shaft.

But as the beam of light hit Dante’s face, the iron pipe slipped from her trembling fingers.

"Dante?" Elena gasped, her voice hoarse, completely breathless, staring at the man she had loved and lost five agonizing years ago.

Dante dropped the pistol. His knees gave out. He collapsed onto the cold stone floor in front of her, wrapping his massive arms around her frail body, burying his face in her neck as he completely broke down, sobbing with a devastating, profound grief.

"I'm so sorry," Dante wept, holding her as if she were made of glass. "I didn't know. I swear to God, Elena, I didn't know."

Elena closed her eyes, wrapping her shaking arms tightly around his broad shoulders. Then, a tiny set of footsteps echoed in the room. Ivy ran forward, throwing her arms around both of her parents, while Argo the dog limped over, resting his heavy head against Elena’s leg.

👉 The family was finally reunited in the darkness, leaving the mafia boss to return to the surface and execute his ultimate justice.
