Chapter 2 - The Standoff

Victor completely froze in sheer, unadulterated terror.

He dropped Sophia’s wrist as if it were on fire, stumbling backward until his back hit the cedar wood panels of the wall. His chest heaved violently. Sweat instantly beaded on his forehead as he stared at the massive black beast blocking his path.

Bruno didn't bark. The giant dog just stood there, its massive muscles coiling under its sleek black coat, issuing a low, vibrating growl that promised absolute, immediate death if Victor made a sudden move.

Victor had personally bought and trained Bruno to be a ruthless killer. The dog was supposed to attack intruders on command. But right now, the beast wasn't looking at Damian, and it wasn't looking at Sophia.

Bruno’s lethal, unblinking yellow eyes were locked entirely on Victor. The dog was fiercely protecting the little girl in the floral dress.

"Damian..." Victor stammered, his aggressive bravado entirely evaporating. He pressed himself harder against the wall, terrified to even breathe. "Call him off. Call your dog off right now!"

Damian remained seated behind the desk. His hands rested flat on the polished wood. He didn't issue a single command. He just watched the scene unfold with an expression of cold, terrifying authority.
