Chapter 28 - leaving the underworld behind

A few months later, the power transfer process was completed smoothly. The Carter family's business network still operated flawlessly and grew ever stronger, but Michael and Emily had completely retreated behind the scenes.
They decided to leave the noisy center of Boston, moving to a beautiful farm located next to a picturesque lake in the suburbs. There were no thick security fences or bodyguards armed to the teeth here.
The farm was bathed in sunlight and the fragrance of flowers and grass. Emily opened a small free clinic in the neighboring town, continuing her mission of saving lives. Meanwhile, Michael enjoyed the simple life of a gardener.
Every afternoon, the mafia boss who once terrified the entire East Coast personally planted vibrant rosebeds for his wife. The scars on his hands were no longer for gripping guns, but for gently nurturing tiny new sprouts.
"Do you ever feel regret about leaving power behind?" Emily smiled, leaning her head on her husband's sturdy shoulder as they both watched the sun set over the calm lake, glowing with brilliant golden light.
