Chapter 4 - The Hidden Toxin

The lead paramedic blinked in profound confusion, his mouth opening and closing as he stared at the maid. He looked at the cardiac monitor, then back at Emily, his face flushing with defensive anger.

"What?" the lead paramedic gasped, completely breathless. "He is in cardiac arrest and his core temperature is plummeting! Heating him is standard protocol! You are a maid, you have no idea what you're talking about!"

"He is not in standard cardiac arrest!" Emily yelled, her hands moving with blinding, cinematic speed as she violently ripped the thermal heating pads away from the tiny baby. She unwrapped the fluffy light blue blanket, exposing Noah's chest to the cool air of the mansion.

Michael lunged forward to stop her, his large hands covered in dark ink reaching to grab her wrists, but Emily shot him a look so piercing, so incredibly authoritative, that the ruthless boss actually froze in place.

"Look at his skin, Michael!" Emily demanded, locking her dark eyes onto the terrified father. "Look at the webbing of his fingers. It’s not blue from oxygen deprivation. It’s mottled red. His muscles aren't flaccid; they're entirely rigid. This is a severe neurotoxic reaction, likely from a synthetic paralytic."

The room fell absolutely dead silent.

"The poison binds violently when exposed to heat," Emily continued rapidly, pressing two fingers firmly against the infant's tiny throat to find a pulse that wasn't there yet. "The heating pads you put on him didn't comfort him. They accelerated the toxin. You essentially boiled his nervous system and forced his heart to shut down to protect his brain."

👉 Emily had figured out the puzzle, but the lead paramedic was about to make a desperate move to stop her from saving the baby.
